Serene Scenery Sunday

Ha roo, pups and cool cats. Zim here with Serene Scenery Sunday. We saw all kinds of wonderful things this week; I'm here to share some of those sights with you. You did see the pix of the Wolf Moon Ammy posted yesterday, didn't you? We liked that maybe best of all this week!

On one of our walks, we saw a good-sized flock of gooses flying over-head.

DSCN3540 Flying Geese!

They fly back and forth between some of the larger lakes that are here, stopping at farm fields for snacks and stuff. We love to see them and to hear them honking at each other!

That blue sky made Mom feel real serene, too. We've had lots of murky skies lately, but we love it when the sun tries to break through. Here's a look at the sun making a good attempt on the north-west edge of our town:

DSCN3554

We were on our way to the Hudson Trail the day Mom took that picture. We didn't find anything that interesting on that go-round, but here are a few shots from our "snow" (ha!) day.

Here I am, approaching the start of the trail:

DSCN3596 Zim

It was so exciting! It's like I was the first one there!!! Look at that undisturbed snow! COOL!

Then I discovered I wasn't really the first one; clearly somebunny had beaten me to the snow.

Somebunny's been here already!

And ...

DSCN3609 Bird Tracks
And somebirdie, too!

Oh well. I was the first pup there! (Dave was with me; I have no idea why he isn't in the pix!) Here I am, checking out the trail:

DSCN3608 Zim

Isn't it an inviting scene? A
serene scene! Ha roo! We saw some cool trees; here's a little collage I put together for you:

You're welcome to go to
our FlickR account to see larger versions of all of these photos!

That's about all the cool sights we saw. I wish I could share the smells with you!

Me (Zim) on the trail

It was a GREAT day for snoofing through the leaves and snow dust and everything!

Thanks for joining me for Serene Scenery (and Snoofers) Sunday! Have a peaceful day!

Zim

You Call This Snow?

Woo, everypup and everycat. It's me - Dave. The biped meteorologists said we were going to get 1-3 inches of snow night before last. Zim and I had great plans to go for a snowy romp ... I mean well-behaved walk in the snow yesterday. We checked the radar before bedtime and everything - and it looked like we were going to get pounded but good! Yeah, well. Here are a couple shots of us out on our walk in the "snow".

IMG_5361 Dave and Zim
This does NOT look like 1-3 inches to me! Can you believe this, Zim?

IMG_5363 Dave and Zim
Umm, Dave. You know who said we were just going to get a "light dusting", don't you?

Woo. Then it hit me. Previously, at Ao4 HQs...

IMG_5369_2 Ammy
Sniff... sniff...
My snowcast calls for a light dusting, with a chance of flurries throughout the day.

Ammy's never wrong! But I saw the radar myself! How does she know these things?!?! Woo.

Anyway, the girls took Mom for a walk after me and Zimmie did.

IMG_5370 Stormy and Ammy
Good weather call, Ammy! I didn't doubt you for a second!
Thank you, Stormy!

I don't know why anyone would listen to any other meteorologist! What was I thinking?!!? Sorry for doubting you, Ammy! Woo. In fact - there was a cool event last night that Am wants to tell you about, so let me pass the post over to her!

Luv,
Dave

Thank you, Davy! Hi everypuppy and everycat! It's me, Ammy, here with an Ao4 Weather Moment. Well, actually it's more like an Astronomy Moment... but close enough! Did you see the full moon last night? Did you know it was the biggest full moon we'll see this year? Because of the elliptical path of the moon's orbit, it was as close to earth as it gets! It's also called the "Wolf Moon"! You can read more about it here.

Mom and I took a couple photos to share with you. We had cloudy skies for the first one, but it's still pretty:

DSCN3614 29 JAN '10 Wolf Moon

And here's a shot after our skies cleared:

DSCN3626 29 JAN '10 Wolf Moon
Wolf Moon 2010

The snow sure didn't pan out like we had hoped, but the full moon was sure something to howl about. :) I hope you enjoyed the photos! Ha-rooooooo!

Love,
Ammy

Fall Over Parade

SmokingSmall-724324

I find it possibly amazing that Gerald Wallace is in the All-Star Game and Josh Smith should be. We did it. We made it. Our choices have been just. Note: I forgot Durant was a first-time All-Star yesterday because, in my mind, he's been on since Texas. Say that what you will about my love with this game.

Oh wait, Josh Smith didn't get in, it stings me right down to the bone, and you can read all about my feelings and history's folly (committed upon its own head, no less), in this precious column of mine.

I ended up cutting a paragraph that might have been all figurative economics too dry for those parts, so I lay it here. Or at least its essence. Think about this: It took time for hs-ers and Euros (in the wake of KG and Dirk) to become automatic presences in the high lottery. There was still a little bit of lingering skepticism, or at least hesitance. And these were the consensus best few teens the world had to offer. Thus, in theory, in the beginning there was a de facto cap placed on what hs/Euro picks made it in. It was only the cream of the crop, those generally agreed upon as the "next KG" or "next Dirk."

However, it didn't stop there. Once these players moved all the way to the top, the floodgates were opened for the "Maybe Next KG" and "Possibly Maybe Next Dirk." This is how you got Josh Howard and David West going at the end of the first round; high school/Euro picks weren't boom-or-bust by nature, they were made to look this way by a willingness to, in effect, scrape the barrel and push the very logic that had made teams pursue them in the first place. The best ones were gambles on great potential, which had built into it some sense of security. It was much more like the risk built into drafting a college player, just with a different form of assurance. The latter ones gambled without any safety net.

This description is remarkably inexact. But what would have happened if teams had never decided to cross that line and go from the relatively safe teens to those with less and less to recommend them as solid pros? When people talk about some sort of committee that would decide when a player could jump from high school, it seems like what they're really talking about is this alternate reality where all these other prospects never snuck in the cracked door on account of equivocation.

Photo Finish Friday

Ha roo, pups and cool cats! It's me, Zimmie, coming at you for Photo Finish Friday! Before I get started, I want to thank you for your patience over the past few days! The nice man from our cable company came out yesterday right on schedule and fixed our connection right up! There was some sort of problem with a splitter/connector between our cable TV and cable modem. Or something. I'm not sure; I didn't get to help. Stormy got to stay here with Dad and supervise. The rest of us did this:

IMG_5359

I think Mom did really well walking the three of us together. It was especially fun when Dave jumped me and we started wrestling! Mom seemed excited about that part, too, especially since Ammy was herding her and kept going behind her back and looping around while Dave and I played husky games! Then, for some reason, Mom decided to have Am herd us... and although we still had fun, it wasn't as fun.

IMG_5356 Ammy herding Zim and Dave
Ammy herding me and Dave

Mom's thinking we can take more walks like this if Ammy's willing to take on herding us as her job. I'm thinking I've got to find a way to get Am to look the other way from time to time. Ha roo roo roo!

After we got home, I decided to do zoomies with Dave, then do some posing up on the cat-walk. I haven't shared photos of me up there for a while - want to take a look? Here we go!

I usually pose over here on this side, facing the living room:

IMG_5343 Zim

Don't I look pensive? Let's move over to the side facing the front door and see how that goes, shall we?

DSCN3582 Zim

I'm not sure I like this side. Give me a moment, would you?

DSCN3583 Zim

I think I like the other side better...

DSCN3586 Zim

...let me work up the energy to move, OK? This posing takes a lot out of me.

DSCN3591 Zim

Oh, yeah. This feels better. Much more comfy, really. It's more "me".

DSCN3592 Zim
Zzzzz......

Have a great day, everypup and everykit! And don't work too hard!

Play bows,
Zim

Technical Difficulties

Woo, everypup and everycat. It's me, Dave. We're experiencing technical difficulties with our internet and email. Sometimes we have fine, fast service, and other times it's non-existant. We have a guy coming out from the company to hopefully fix it this afternoon. We're trying to get to your blogs, but it's slow and frustrating. Bear with us?

Thanks.

FD Guest Lecture: Ode to Quiet Stars

anderson-varejao-hair

A brief history of my basketball verse feud with author Sherman Alexie: First, Sherman wrote a poem for TrueHoop on his reluctance to see Iverson start in the All-Star Game. Then, I hit back with a pro-AI bucket of rhymes. Now, here's his response to my response. The Monta stuff hurts!

Let me sing for Saint Thomas Aquinas,
Who believed truth is found through faith
And reason. He would not have been afraid
Of the Adjusted Plus-Minus

Or any number that contradicts
What we see and what we think we know.
The numbers tell us Anderson Varejao
Is a quiet star, setting vicious picks

And destroying the offensive schemes
Of every team. I’d take that Brazilian
Maniac over a million
Vince Carters and Tracy McGradys.

The numbers tell us that Kobe is not
The most clutch at the end of games
(LeBron is Mr. Clutch’s real name,
Though you’d be okay with a Dirk jumpshot

Or just a simple pick-and-roll).
Some folks think that Monta Ellis
Is a star, but the numbers tell us
His team suffers when he’s got the ball.

Why do hoops fans believe what they see
When there’s no sense weaker than sight?
Why do hoops fans take such delight
In crossovers and dunks, those simple dreams,

But hardly ever reward those players
Like Joe Johnson or Shane Battier,
Who have complex and strange games---
Whose skills have layer upon layer?

I’m sick of it! I’m tired and pissed!
Well, no, I’m not mad. I’m just bored
By those fans who keep track of the score
But never realize what they’ve missed.

And why do we give these fans such power
When they choose All-Stars without reason?
Here’s the tragic truth: This season,
Iverson isn’t even better than Luke Ridnour.

"Not Allowed on the Furniture"

Play bows, pups and cool-cats. It's me, Zim. Did you read what Dave wrote yesterday about how we are not allowed on the furniture except for the biped bed? Yeah, well, I have other ideas about that. Do you remember our Christmas pictures? Then you might remember the sitzbank and how very, very comfy I looked up there. Remember?

Since then, I've decided that baby is mine - all mine! Here's a pic Mom took of me back in the end of December that I've been meaning to share:

IMG_5204 Zim

Ha roo roo roo. "Not allowed on the furniture"! How does Mom come up with these things?

And Stormy is right, as always. It pays to be cute. And if Mom's taking pix, you're not reeeeeeeally in trouble.

Play bows,
Zim

An Engraving on the Stem of a 200-Year-Old Pipe

Yesterday, video surfaced that threatens to blow the NBA -- nay, the world -- wide open.

The powers that be have been controlling the league through any number of shadowy organizations for years -- we all know that David Stern rigged the 1985 lottery for the Knicks by dipping their envelope in pure Vermont maple syrup, to name just one example.

But now, one brave soul has proven what we all suspected: LeBron James is a Freemason. Somebody get Benjamin Franklin Gates on the phone!

John Krolik unearthed the video from Real Cavs Fans, but he decided to take the post down due to what I can only assume were major threats from the Illimunati themselves. Yet the truth must run free.

2010 Audi R8 V10 5.2 FSI quattro high-performance Sports Car

2010 Audi R8 V10 5.2 FSI quattro

Audi announced that the price for the highly anticipated 2010 Audi R8 5.2 FSI quattro V10 sports car will be rolled out in Germany in the second quarter of 2009 at a basic price of EUR 142,400. The Audi R8 V10 is the result of cumulative know-how from Audi's string of Le Mans victories. Its naturally aspirated engine combines racing technology such as dry sump lubrication with FSI gasoline direct injection. The ten-cylinder design is the perfect synthesis for impressive top performance, mighty pulling power, and low weight. Starting in 2009, this engine will also prove its potential on the world's racetracks - in the new Audi R8 GT3 racing car Audi is developing for customer teams in conformance with the GT3 rules.
2010 Audi R8 V10 5.2 FSI quattro

Audi R8 V10 5.2 FSI quattro is the next variant of its top-of-the-line model. With the Audi R8, the brand has established itself at the forefront of high-end sports cars from the very start - and now comes the Audi R8 V10. Its 5.2-liter, ten-cylinder engine churns out 386 kW (525 hp) and 530 Nm (390.91 lb-ft) of torque, which makes for breathtaking performance. With superior Audi technologies such as quattro all-wheel drive, the lightweight aluminum body, the innovative all-LED headlights, and its striking design, the Audi R8 V10 takes pole position against the competition.
2010 Audi R8 V10 5.2 FSI quattro

The V10 engine in the production sports car will be almost identical in construction to the one in the racing version. Its displacement is 5,204 cc, at 6,500 rpm it delivers 530 Nm (390.91 lb-ft) of torque, at 8,000 rpm its power tops out at 386 kW (525 hp). The specific power output is 100.9 hp per liter of displacement - and each hp has to propel only 3.09 kilograms (6.91 lb) of weight, because the Audi R8 V10 in the version with the six-speed manual gearshift weighs only 1,620 kilograms (3571 lb). The engine accounts for 258 of these kilograms (569 lb) - that's only 31 kilos (68 lb) more than the V8.
2010 Audi R8 V10 5.2 FSI quattro

The 5.2-liter powerplant uses direct injection according to the FSI principle developed by Audi. The Audi R8 V10 with R tronic gets by on an average of 13.7 liters per 100 km (17.17 US mpg). The Audi R8 V10 5.2 FSI quattro rockets from zero to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 3.9 seconds. In the version with the sequentially shifting R tronic it reaches 200 km/h (124.27 mph) in another 8.1 seconds. Even then its propulsive power hardly lessens: it's sufficient to reach a top speed of 316 km/h (196.35 mph). The immense force, the spontaneity and the thrust of the acceleration, plus the sound of the engine - all these impressions coalesce into a breathtaking sports car experience. The V10 plays a concert with growling bass tones and powerful high notes, which grows into a grandiose fortissimo as the engine revs up. This sonorous acceleration doesn't reach its limit until 8,700 rpm.
2010 Audi R8 V10 5.2 FSI quattro

A contributing factor to the wide lead in traction and driving safety of the Audi R8 V10 over the competition is quattro all-wheel drive - it's the superior technology especially for a high-performance sports car. Four powered wheels get more grip than two. They enable the driver to step on the gas sooner when coming out of a curve. It's not only the traction that benefits, but also the transverse dynamics and the stability.
